Episode 14: Words Have Meaning

Words and concepts we once embraced, but now either can't or have redefined.

Three Women and a Goose is all about spiritual exploration for the fun of it! Our three hosts, Meg McPeek, Elizabeth Burnette, and Mary Hemmer gather to discuss topics ranging from faith to motherhood to joy to the challenges of being human and more. Give the show a follow and join the conversation. We love likes, shares, subscribers, comments, and any other way to engage in our work.

When exploring spirituality for the fun of it, words matter! What are you go-to can’t stand words, phrases or concepts? Sometimes we grow up hearing words or phrases in our churches, homes, or social groups that we took for granted as “normal,” but later find no longer serve us. Sometimes we reject these concepts entirely while others we sit with for a while and find ways to redefine them to better fit who we have become.

Meg, Elizabeth, and Mary explore concepts and phrases from the sacred to the silly: baptism, born again, irregardless, and a word Elizabeth refused to allow spoken on the show (it begins with M and ends with -oist). How we speak impacts how we think, who we are, and how we communicate our identity to the world. “Witness” and “testimony” express vastly different meanings depending on whether someone speaks them in a courtroom or a church gathering.

That are the words you can’t stand? What about words you once loved, but now have become void of meaning? What about a process you’ve undertaken to examine, dissect, and redefine language in your life? Drop us a comment and let us know. We’d love to hear from you!
